Charles Henry Wetzel (who typically went by Henry) was born to John and Susannah (Sheaffer) Wetzel on January 22, 1859 in Pennsylvania, USA. He was the youngest of at least eight known children. At some point, the Wetzels moved to Iowa. On March 21, 1873, he married Nancy Marie Avery (the daughter of Philo and Orilla (Chapman) Avery) in Madison County, Iowa.
